23 March, 2010 Sunscreen Labeling and Warnings: A Human Factors Analysis
Kelly A. Burke, Jonathan A. Dorris, Nathan T. Dorris
New DAI research on this topic will be presented at the upcoming 3rd International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics in July of 2010. Despite a plethora of compelling scientific evidence identifying the risks associated with excessive unprotected sun exposure, the efforts of the FDA and organizations such as the Skin Cancer Foundation, and a significant increase in public health promotion campaigns warning about these risks, the incidence of skin cancer continues to rise yearly. Clearly, an increase in the awareness of the risks of sun exposure on the skin is not fully translating into the adoption of appropriate sun protection behaviors.

30 September, 2007 Eye Movements While Reading Degraded On-Product Warnings
Nathan Dorris, Brian Valimont, and Eric Boelhouwer
This investigation tested whether heavily degraded warnings affected gaze patterns and resulted in longer viewing times than lightly degraded warnings. The study included sixteen participants who viewed six matched pairs of lightly and heavily degraded warnings. Eye movements were recorded using an eye tracking system while the total time on task for each warning was collected.

20 February, 2006 Designing Anthropometric Symbols Using Interactive Evolutionary Computation
Brian Carnahan, Nathan Dorris and Lois-Ann Kuntz
The purpose of this research was to develop a new approach to symbol development that used interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) to expand the end-user participation in the design process.

20 February, 2006 Warning Degradation and Durability
Naimi F. Glasscock and Nathan T. Dorris
Physical degradation of warnings is a critical, yet primarily unexplored, aspect of warning effectiveness. This chapter provides guidance on issues related to degradation of visual warnings as well as aspects of durability that should be considered in warning design and selection. Warnings are classified into distinct categories to clarify the scope of the subsequent discussions and applicability of the issues covered. The main focus is on environmental and facility signs and on-product warning labels. Topics include the effects of degradation on the warning process, assessing durability of warnings, measuring degradation, material components of warnings, potential failure modes associated with warnings degradation, and durability and testing of warning materials. The chapter also considers such issues as warning selection, availibility and cost, and maintenance issues. Practical examples that deal with these issues are provided.
